TBT to January 1957: A United Nations Peacekeeper serving with the UN Emergency Force (UNEF) is standing guard beside the UN flag in the Suez Canal Zone.
UNEF was the earliest armed peacekeeping operation. Today, UN Peacekeepingdeploys more than 113,000 military, police and civilian personnel in 16 peacekeeping operations on four continents.
Peacekeeping is an investment in global peace, security, and prosperity. Every day UN Peacekeepers go where no one else will to keep the peace, restore stability, protect civilians and help create conditions under which refugees can voluntarily return home — at a fraction of the cost of many national military operations.
