Fun facts about the letter Y
In Old English, the ‘th’ sound was represented by a letter called ‘thorn’ ( þ ). However, when printed type became popular, most presses contained only the Latin alphabet, which had no ‘thorn’, and so many typesetters decided to use a capital Y instead. Thus, on old-time signs, the ‘ye’ in “Ye Old Shoppe” is pronounced just like ‘the’.
